Director of Contracting Projects

General Description

The Director of Contracting Projects is a senior leadership role responsible for overseeing the successful execution of all mining and tunneling contracting projects—from initiation through close-out. This individual provides strategic direction, operational leadership, and ensures excellence in project delivery. Key objectives include maintaining safety, meeting schedule and budget targets, achieving high-quality standards, fostering strong client relationships, and contributing to the company’s growth and profitability.

Strategic Leadership & Planning

  • Develop and implement strategic project execution plans aligned with company goals and client objectives.
  • Participate in business development activities, including opportunity identification, bid preparation, client presentations, and contract negotiations.
  • Stay current with industry trends, emerging technologies, and regulatory changes to maintain competitive advantage and ensure compliance.

Project Oversight & Execution

  • Lead and support multiple project teams, ensuring adherence to plans, specifications, and safety protocols in collaboration with the safety team.
  • Monitor project performance, progress, and financial metrics against established baselines.
  • Implement robust project controls, including cost tracking, scheduling, quality assurance, and risk management.
  • Oversee resource allocation across multiple project sites, including personnel, equipment, and materials.
  • Provide timely and accurate reporting to senior management and clients.
  • Drive continuous improvement in project delivery processes.
  • Resolve complex project-related issues and disputes.
  • Direct all phases of project execution: planning, design, procurement, construction, commissioning, and handover.
  • Manage detailed project plans covering scope, cost estimates, schedules, and resource allocation.
  • Oversee contract management with third-party vendors and contractors to ensure compliance with deliverables.
  • Lead the Request for Proposal (RFP) process, including technical and commercial evaluations.

Team Leadership & Development

  • Recruit, mentor, and develop a high-performing team of Project Managers, Engineers, Superintendents, Safety personnel, and craft workers.
  • Foster a strong safety culture and ensure compliance with health, safety, and environmental regulations.
  • Promote a collaborative and accountable work environment that encourages innovation.
  • Delegate effectively and communicate project expectations, goals, and scope clearly.

Client & Stakeholder Management

  • Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, employees, and stakeholders.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for high-level client communications and issue resolution.
  • Represent the company in interactions with clients, subcontractors, suppliers, and regulatory agencies.
  • Identify opportunities for business growth and service expansion with existing clients.
  • Address concerns promptly and act as a proactive problem-solver.

Financial & Resource Management

  • Accountable for the financial performance of the project portfolio, including revenue, cost control, and profitability.
  • Oversee project budgets and major expenditures.
  • Provide accurate and timely earned value and invoice data to the accounting team.
  • Identify opportunities for cost savings, efficiency improvements, and project optimization.

Qualifications

  • 15–20+ years of senior-level experience in mining operations, project management, or heavy civil tunnel construction, preferably within a contracting environment.
  • Proven success in delivering large-scale underground projects on time and within budget.
  • Experience managing multidisciplinary teams and complex stakeholder environments.
  • Deep understanding of mining processes and engineering principles.
  • Strong knowledge of business fundamentals, construction law, and regulatory standards relevant to heavy mining and tunneling.
  • Proficiency in project management tools and software for cost and schedule control.
  • Solid financial acumen, including budgeting, cost control, and reporting.
  • Strategic thinking, analytical skills, and problem-solving capabilities.
  • Strong leadership, team-building, and mentoring abilities.
  • Excellent communication in English language, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities under pressure.
  • Skilled in negotiation and dispute resolution.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mining, Civil, Geological, or Geotechnical Engineering (or related field) required.

Preferred Enhancements

  • Professional Engineering (PE) registration
  • MBA or equivalent executive education
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) certification

Compensation

Includes a competitive base salary plus performance-based bonuses tied to performance metrics to be negotiated, such as revenue, job profitability, and EBITDA growth.

Equipment Used

Personal computer, camera,  SUV or similar light vehicles, computer software, miscellaneous office equipment.  

Working Conditions

While on project sites be able to work in and around a potentially wet, dusty, noisy and/or dirty underground and surface work environment at various environmental and weather conditions, including high and low temperatures and high elevation.  

Travel

Position is based in Sandy, UT, with frequent travel throughout the Western US  and potential occasional foreign travel to Canada or Mexico.   Major project startup phases may require temporary deployment to project locations.

Physical Requirements

While performing the duties of this job, employee may occasionally be required to stand for extended periods of time; walk on muddy, steep, icy and uneven surfaces; climb vertical ladders; or sit for extended periods of time; use hand and fingers to handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; regularly required to talk and hear. The employee must be able to regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 pounds. Specific vision requirements for this job include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus.

Must be medically qualified to wear half mask respirator and have no health conditions which would pose an elevated risk to the employee if in a remote area.
